The Weekly Catch Up!

We EXPLORE and INFORM you what happened this week in the world of TECH!

This won’t be a long one but we will give you a quick run down of all the exciting new releases, rumors and news from the digital space.

Let’s get into it shall we!

1) Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event ( July 9th, NYC)

This event, held twice annually, had unveiled the much anticipated foldables, Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and Z Flip 7FE. Unveiled with their new ultra-thin design, AI-powered personalization, 200MP camera, and redesigned battery life and displays. The S-Pen was omitted on Fold 7 to achieve thinner profile. They also launched the galaxy watch 8 series, which was revealed to have vascular load ( whatever the heaven that means & antioxidant tracking plus fitness coaching. These new devices were heavily A.I focused powered by Google Gemini. These devices are available for pre-order, release scheduled for 25Th July, Pricing will vary by region.

2) YouTube Monetization Policy Overhaul ( Effective Mid July )

Starting on the 15th of July 2025, YouTube will demonetize AI-generated, Repetitive, or mass-produced content, like slideshows, synthesized voice overs, repurposed clips, etc.

Any channel considered to be relying on low-effort AI may lose ad eligibility. Solo live-streaming will now require users to be at least 16 years of age beginning on July 22.

3) Government Cloud Contracts and Discounts

  • Google Is expected to offer steep discounts on cloud services to the United States Government, mirroring the deal made by Oracle’s, the 75% deal; Microsoft is likely to follow with Microsoft Azure and AWS is likely to follow suit. This is said to be in part of broader cost-cutting and renegotiation of long-term tech contracts.
  • The UK Government has partnered with Google Cloud to modernize the public sector IT systems and migrate away from legacy infrastructure. The aim is to train 100,000 civil servants by 2030 and launch a tech procurement marketplace.

4) AI Regulation and Governance

In Ireland, Ireland’s Fianna Fáil ( The Republican, centre to centre right, political party of Ireland), has proposed establishing a National AI office with €25M annual budget to regulate AI in critical sectors like healthcare and transport. The watchdog would have the authority to suspend problematic systems and impose fines to ensure public safety.

5) Tech Layoffs and Corporate Shakeups

  • Intel is to cut up to 20% of it’s global workforce, beginning on July 15, including the shutdown of the automotive chip division. Intel’s Chief Strategy Officer also resigned on June 30Th and a new CTO/AI officer has been appointed.
  • A report has shown 94000+ tech jobs have been lost in 2025 so far (~507/day), mainly driven by a shift focusing towards AI enabled roles at Microsoft, Meta, Tesla, and elsewhere

6) AI, Energy & Research Developments

  • OpenAI reveals GPT-5 will integrate reasoning, multi-modal understanding, and long-context capabilities into one unified model, slated for later 2025.
  • Texas has passed the sweeping AI Governance Law including the transparency mandates, bias audit frameworks, and mandatory AI compliance for public and private sectors.
  • “Big Tech’s” AI demands have driven new partnerships with nuclear energy farms to meet the vast power requirements needed to to run data centres and training infrastructure.
  • AI-accelerated material discovery yields eco-friendly cooling plant that reflects solar radiation and reduces building energy consumption by up to 30%.

 7)  Other Important Hight-lights from the past week

  • Cloudflare introduces pay-per-crawl model to charge AI bots crawling publisher sites, raising ethical debates.
  • Xfinity faces backlash for using WI-FI signals to monitor in-home motion.
  • Proton joins lawsuit against Apple, alleging predatory practices harming developers and consumers
  • New AI note-taker tools increasingly replace the presence of humans in Zoom calls
  •  Cursor launches web app to manage AI coding agents.
